The Final Curtain
Donald Campbell CBE, World Record attempt on Coniston water, January 4th 1967
Donald Campbell commenced his final and fatal assault on the world water speed record at 8.42 am on the 4th January 1967, on Coniston Water in Cumbria.
His first run from north to south on the 5 mile long lake was timed at 297 mph. and after turning at the south end of the lake, unaccountably without refuelling, Donald commenced the final run in a craft which was not only lighter, but also planing into its own wash from the first run.
Shortly before the second kilometre marker post, at a speed since estimated to have been in excess of 300 mph, Bluebird’s nose lifted from the water and became airborne, turning an almost complete somersault before hitting the water, breaking up, and quickly disappearing into the depths.
He was posthumously awarded the Queen’s Commendation for Gallantry.

How Long a Mile
DONALD M.CAMPBELL CBE WORLD LAND SPEED RECORD
In 1964, John Cobb’s Land Speed Record of 394.20 mph was broken by Donald Campbell piloting his turbine powered Bluebird CN7, on the dry salt bed of Lake Eyre in the South Australian desert.
The weather, and seemingly the lake itself had conspired for months to destroy the project, but finally, at 7.20 am on Friday 17th July on a second track several miles east of the original, Donald Campbell set off on his bid for the record.
Bluebird’s ‘Proteus’ turbine had been tuned to deliver 10% above its rated max. power, to compensate for the still poor track surface, and Campbell opened up the great car to its full 110% on the soft uneven salt. He amazingly recorded identical speeds of 403.10 mph in both directions to take the record. Better track conditions would probably have added 40 mph to Campbell’s new mark, but he had the record at last, and turned his sights on the Water Speed Record once more.
On the last day of 1964, he broke the W.S.R. on Lake Dumbleyung in Australia, thereby becoming the first man since his father to hold both Land and Water Speed Records, and the first ever to do so in the same year.
